Coalition study finds AI token costs 1.5‑5× higher for non‑English languages

A study by the Coalition for Language Equity in AI Research found AI models use 1.5 to 5 times more tokens for the most expensive languages than the cheapest among the 20 most popular internet languages. Expanding the analysis to 200 languages showed the token cost gap in one model grew 17 times.

Why it matters

Benchmark multilingual pricing against the 1.5‑5× token disparity; users will expect lower costs for non‑English interactions.
