Google launches first data‑center satellite running Gemma 4 model

Google’s prototype space data center, carrying four TPUs, is online after launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 with over 100 other spacecraft. The satellite runs a DeepMind Gemma 4 model that writes cheesy poetry, can generate up to 1 kW electricity, and powers a single TPU for about 20 minutes at a time while testing thermal and radiation resilience.

Why it matters

Google’s Gemma 4 running on an orbital TPU shows satellite inference is feasible; evaluate latency‑critical edge features for future products.
