Startups edit Chinese open-weight models for Western use

Startups are editing Chinese open-weight large language models to harden security, increase fairness and remove dangerous knowledge for Western customers. CrowdStrike found DeepSeek’s R1 model generated code with severe security vulnerabilities up to 50% more often on politically sensitive prompts, and other studies reported less secure code when the user identified as a U.S. government official.

Why it matters

Benchmark edited Chinese models for security and fairness; Western users will expect compliance with local regulations.
